I spend a lot of time searching for information on the web. The problem is only 1/3 of the pages out there are indexed. Boolean operators, meta words, wild cards…oh my! If you're into serious searching, it pays to construct a search to ensure the results you want. So what should you do when you really need quality information? The following links may help.
| Metasearch sites are a timesaver because they query multiple engines simultaneously. | |
|---|---|
| DogPile | My first choice for Metasearches |
| Mamma | The mother of all search engines |
| ProFusion | Allows some nice options |
| QueryServer | Lighting fast and quite good all-around |
| Search Links | |
|---|---|
| Anchor Desk on Searching | This article has more information of search engines. |
| Yahoo | Yahoo is where I normally start a search. Their coverage is good and very complete. Searching for e-mail addresses and street addresses that include maps make this a most useful resource. |
| AltaVista | AltaVista is a very good starting point also. Refining a search is more easily accomplished here than with Yahoo. |
| FAST Search | Not a meta search engine. Very fast! |
| Briefing Center | Use AnchorDesk's Briefing Centers as one-stop resources on the subjects that matter most to you. They are updated constantly. |
| HotBot | HotBot is a more specific search engine. |
| Electric Monk | Enter a question as you would ask another person -- there's no need to mess with keywords. For instance, you can ask, "Who was the ninth president of the United States?" |
| How to do Searches | The folks at Ziff Davis have put together a fine tutorial on searching the web. |
| Another Tutorial | Another ZD tutorial with links and ratings of some lesser known search engines. |
| Domain Name | Check ownership of domain names. Allows you to register a domain name. Another section allows you to submit your home page to 450 search engines. |
| GoTo | A new search service. |
| America's Homepage | As good a reverse directory as I have found. Reverse directories allow you to enter a telephone number and have it tell you who's number it is. |
| Call 555-1212 | This is new. Interface is a bit easier to use. ZIP code finder also. |
| Reverse Phone Directory | Find a phone number from a street address. |
| Find Your Representatives | Search for your U. S. Senators and Congressman |
| Voting Record | Those guys and gals in Congress work for you. And it never hurts to monitor your employees. Congressional Quarterly's Vote Watch tracks Congressional activities with a searchable database of voting records |
| Job Search | Still looking for the perfect job? Try Wanted Jobs 98. This free, intelligent search agent uses your input (state, job title, and keywords) to query all of the most popular job databases on the Web. This download allows you to search weekly for any changes in job postings. |
