Hard Drive Preparation



Before Installing Windows 7
  • Unplug all hard drives except the one that you are working with.
        In the ROMBIOS set the remaining drive to be the boot drive.
        I used a 40 GB drive but you might wish to uses and 80 GB drive.
  • Boot from the Windows DVD.
  • At the first screen from the DVD press Shift + F10.
  • At DOS prompt type DISKPART 
    
At DISKPART>list disk 			 /* see what hard drives are attached
At DISKPART>select disk 0 		 /* work with the first hard drive
At DISKPART>list disk 			 /* the asterisk will be set to the disk you selected
At DISKPART>clean 			 /* all partitions on this disk will be removed
At DISKPART>create part prim 		 /* create a new primary partition
At DISKPART>sel part 1 			 /* select this partition
At DISKPART>active 			 /* make this partition bootable
At DISKPART>format quick label=sam40 	 /* name this disk sam40
At DISKPART>assign 			 /* assign a letter to this drive

  • At DOS prompt type exit

  • Proceed with a standard install.

  • I did not provide a Product Key with the inital install.
        Windows 7 allows you a 30 day grace period.

  • Next the specific drivers for my MSI X58 Pro-E Motherboard were installed.
  • Then the drivers for the Nvidia 9400 GT video interface.
    • Anti Virus

  • Lastly AVG 9.0 and Acronis True Image 11 are installed.
  • A working image is created on my backup hard drive.

  • Trillian 3.1 September 2009 date.
  • Various samll utilities and timers.
    • Using SLMGR
    1. slmgr -ipk [Product Key] = Installs the Produck Key that came with your DVD.
    2. slmgr -ato = Activate your copy of Windows Vista.
    3. slmgr -xpr = tells you how long the current install is good for.
    4. slmgr -rearm = Extends the grace period by 30 days. This can be done only 3 times.

    5. A Product Key can also be provided via the Control Panel > Sytem utility.

  • Windows Anytime Upgrade makes it easy to evolve to a higher edition of Windows 7.
    • Privileges
  • Run the Command Prompt as Administrator:
        Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right click on Command Prompt and select Pin to Start Menu

  • To make this a "privileged task:
        Start > Right click on Command Prompt > Select the Shortcut tab > Click the Advanced... button and check the box

  • Any Windows task like editing invoked from the "DOS Box"will of course run with Administrator privileges.

  • Both my rotating hard drive and my solid state drive were impacted by this exploit.

  • The Freeze Problem I definitely recommend doing a powercfg -energy query in the DOS box.

  • Copy DVD to Flash drive by using Command Prompt as administrator and entering xcopy dvd:\*.* usb: /s /e /x

  • Change directory and rename usb:\sources\ei.cfg to ei.old

  • Launch usb:\sources\setup.exe.  Then select the version you wish to install.

  • Install this version from the USB flash drive.  This will go much faster than a DVD install.

    When you are done you will have a 30 day trial of the code.
    If you have an activation key you must activate after 30 days.

  • The above text file may be viewed or printed.

  • As a test Windows 7 was installed on a Dell Instron e1705.  Everything worked normally and there were no "got-yas".  After installing the Home group was joined in order to provide both common images and documents as well as print service.

    Creating the Folder
  • On your desk top create a new folder.
  • Select this folder by clicking it one time then press F2 and rename it to:
    GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
  • Then double click the folder and you will see a number of "godMode" icons and tasks.
  • These can save you a lot of time when you are customizing an installation for your clients.
