Using Drivers Written for Windows XP
Windows XP drivers can be used under Windows Vista 32 bit editions. With Windows Vista Microsoft continues using "signed drivers". A signed driver is one that has passed the Microsoft approval process. The rules are somewhat relaxed with Vista 32 bit editions.


Microsoft to Require Signed Drivers for 64-bit Vista
Concern over computer security continues to grow each year. One of the most insidious ways that computers can come under attack is through the installation of rootkits, programs that typically install themselves at the device driver level (or Kernel Loadable Module level in Linux) and take control over the entire system, bypassing any additional security and hiding themselves from the user. Such programs can be difficult to detect without the use of special software, as they typically hide their running processes.
