Today September 9, 2006 Microsoft made Release Candidate 1 available.
Again the download was released as an ISO image.
This image was extracted to DVD and copied my hard drive for ease of installing.

Release Candidate 1  has both a 32 and a 64 bit version.
Release Candidate 1 is Windows Vista Ultimate.
So you get to try all of the features.  
Installing Windows Release Candidate 1
Preparation
  • My boot dive is configured as follows:
  • Partition 1 (40Gb) is an NTFS partition and has Windows XP installed.
  • Partition 2 (40Gb) is a NTFS partition but can be left unformatted.
  • My data resides on a different physical hard drive.
  • I back up my operating system partition with Ghost 2003.
  • Downloading
    1. Download and save the ISO image Iso Image RC-1
    2. Image size: 2,709,782,528 bytes.
    3. Download time: About 5 hours using DSL.
    Installation
    1. Load Partition with a base install of Windows XP as an NTFS.
    2. Extract the ISO image to a DVD using ultraISO
    3. Copy this DVD to an install directory on your hard drive to make installation easier.
    4. Install Vista Release Candidate 1. I installed from my hard drive. The install took about 30 minutes end to end.
    Ghosting
    1. Boot with your floppy disk.
    2. Switch to your Ghost image directory.
    3. Launch Ghost 2003.
    4. Create a Ghost image of the installation.
